The Importance of Learning a Second Language

Introduction:

For many of us, we speak and write the same words as those around us. We grow up in different nations, groups, cultures, and learn in different settings, but we will also encounter people who speak or act similarly, if not identically, to us. Popular languages such as English, Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, and many more have connected several million people around the world. These languages are constantly evolving and increasing, and will be learnt across generations to spread their growth. Many people limit themselves by not being sufficiently enticed to learn a new language, but what if we do?

The Benefits of Learning a New Language:

• Challenging and working your mind

• Creating a decisive and consistent routine

These are often a result of learning a new language, and not individuals chasing after them. Learning a new language, such as English, can be highly advantageous in numerous ways. First, you create a mental and working map for you to constantly check upon. To simplify further, you challenge your brain to learn new things and force it to build patterns that can be applied to various things. Take an English book, for example, the constant recollection of vocabulary terms and grammar rules will alter how your brain favors remembering rules and terms because it is constantly being engaged with those items. It will build patterns, and in other areas of life, you may find it easier to memorize rules or informational ideas.

Another Benefit of learning a second language is the increased cultural interaction. We as humans want to fit with eachother, and create bonds with people of different ethnic backgrounds. However, language is often a limiting factor in communication and truly expressing our emotions to peers in different nations. You may find it difficult to bond with individuals from Asia or Africa if you were born in the Western parts of America, because we have never been surrounded by those individuals. People often assimilate into other regions, but what happens when you are lost or having difficulties, and local groups have no idea how to help you in your situation? This is a major reason why learning a second language is beneficial for everyone.

Difficulties:

Learning a language is time-consuming, tedious, and takes an exhaustive amount of effort to master. But all life skills take several years to perfect. Remember the last time you played a sport, an instrument, or a video game. We were terrible at first, but eventually, with continuous practice and perseverance, we grew as individuals and improved our skills. Similar logic and processes apply to learning a second language. We have amazing work ethics, but they tend to only operate during interest or motivation, not through boredom. Languages can be boring at times to learn, which is a significant reason why individuals struggle with commitment. But boring things tend to be the most beneficial for us in the long run.

What Language Should I Learn:

Once motivation and a challenge are delivered to us, we ask ourselves,

Many people get too tied up with learning the best and most practical language and spend more time researching real-world applications than actually learning a language. All languages are useful and have their advantageous attributes to them. However, it is also true that learning a widely spoken language such as English or Spanish is favorable. Dozens of countries around the world will have people who are proficient in either one of these languages, because they are often a criterion for proper communication. They are also very similar in terms of the alphabet, so individuals who are proficient in one language may find learning the latter easier than most options.

Choose a language you feel comfortable with and feel attached to, rather than forcing yourself to indulge in a boring subject. It should be fun to learn, not forced.
