The Importance of Honesty and Truth

Introduction:

Imagine being at an interview, and the interviewer asks a series of questions.

• “What makes you a good fit?”

• “What are your aspirations?”

• “What are your skillsets?”

• “How confident are you in leading a team?”

Most of these questions go over your head; you want the position and will try your best to persuade the hiring manager to hire you. Once you land the job, now what? Everyone believes you are a confident leader, but the words you said were a hoax. It is important to tell the truth and truly speak up for what you believe.

Always Question:

Questioning is one of the most important skills for all teachers, businessmen, doctors, and lawyers. Anyone who has strong ambitions must master the simple skill of questioning. It is important on numerous levels, as it allows us to understand what we truly wish to learn and the information we are processing. We should learn valuable information and teach factually correct information as well. Try to be skeptical whenever you are told something because it may not be the right information, or you are hindering yourself from growing. In the interview example, we are inhibiting ourselves and potentially risking developing strong connections with others because of the naivety in the interview. We should elaborate on our skills and be as descriptive as possible. Don't nod to every single thing the hiring manager says.

Missed Opportunities:

As mentioned before, dozens of missed opportunities are a result of not being able to speak up. Speaking comes in many forms and is more complex at a superficial level. At first glance, it seems basic: talk and be as confident as possible. But there are also internal aspects to it. Gestures and body language are important indicators of how people perceive you, and if you blatantly nod and accept everything, others may note how you act in certain situations. You need to stay firm and list any negatives about you. Do not worry if people critique your skills because you are simply stating the facts, and it is better than lying or ending up in scenarios where you are forced to display them. Once you reveal yourself as weak in areas you’ve stated you’re great at, people will treat you different and people may avoid you because they do not want to be associated with liars. Word will spread, and you will miss opportunities due to a simple nod.

How do these Ideas Relate?

Questioning is important for understanding what you are experiencing at the moment, and the truth will explain your comprehension to others. Ask in-depth questions and constantly look for answers to contradict yourself because we need consistency and a way to showcase ourselves as reliable. Arbitrary notions of our hiring manager may reveal us as the perfect candidate, but once assignments start piling up, our skills will be revealed to the entire team.

Truth:

We’ve covered a couple of ideas and connected them, and another one of those ideas is truth. Truth is important for showcasing yourself as reliable. Always try to be honest and work with aspiration, not reliance. To simplify further, you shouldn’t be forced or dependent upon others to work; you should have the courage to work yourself, and this relates to passion. Passion will allow you to speak more truthfully because you truly love the action. When you force yourself to do something, you don’t create a strong connection, and thus, lies are more likely to accumulate. This is a significant reason why you pick important and meaningful activities for yourself and build upon them.

Lies:

On the other end of the spectrum, we have lies. Lies seem like a way to fasten work or achieve our goals more quickly, but it has serious long term consequences. When we lie about certain things, we tend to forget these things later on, but others may still remember them and question us about them. For example, if you tell a friend you’re amazing at history, but you are terrible, they will think to themselves, “This guy is pretty reliable, I’ll ask him for help on the next test.” We know lies are false, which is why we forget them in a short span, but others believe they are true, and will rely on you for their goals. You build a big burden, and you’ll have to figure out ways to escape the maze you constructed.
