Growth Vs Fixed Mindset in English

Introduction:

Many people believe that the most gifted and successful athletes, celebrities, entrepreneurs, or even the kid who got the highest score on midterms, are naturally gifted and have everything for them. While some individuals may have natural traits and advantages, it takes time and effort to realise your potential as a human fully, and a proper mindset helps anchor it.

Growth vs Fixed Mindset:

You may have heard of the term “Growth Mindset,” but what does it mean exactly?

Growth mindset individuals have multiple things in common, such as,

  • Open to criticism

  • Learn from their mistakes

  • Challenge themselves

  • Push themselves past their limits

  • Working smarter, not harder

Essentially, the way everyone should think and approach things is with a growth mindset. Fixed mindset individuals often have these in common:

  • Blame circumstances

  • Do not challenge themselves

  • Give up easily

  • Cope with easier tasks

  • Work ineffectively

This is the way a majority of people think; however, it is not optimal for maximum growth in an individual, especially for learning a new language. Difficult languages such as English take patience, motivation, and proper structuring in scheduling to fully master. You cannot simply grasp the concepts of English in a couple of hours. Not everyone can be a supercomputer, and not everyone has the ability to instantly solve every problem they encounter.

People are Scared to Change Their Mindset:

As much as many people want to deny it, they are anxious about approaching their own mindset. It’s natural for a human to be eccentric and believe they are the best. This is not a negative; in fact, confidence is very important for growth, but some people cope with negative situations through irrational beliefs. Self-serving bias is a phenomenon that displays how humans approach certain stimuli. People will attribute their successes to themselves and their effort, but often ridicule and blame the environment for negative impacts.

  • “If only this game wasn’t bugging, I could’ve beaten this player.”

  • “Huh, obviously if I were talented, I would’ve gotten the highest score on this exam.”

  • “Of course, that guy got the deal; he is dressed nicely.”

There are times when we feel obligated to criticise our surroundings or other people for our own faults. It is not the right way to approach things, though. It seriously impacts our health in ways we do not fully understand. You also may feel worse about yourself because of constantly comparing yourself. If something is so negative, why do we fear challenging it, and why is it a consistent phenomenon? There are numerous answers, but a major one is that humans are prideful animals. We want everything to go our way, and we want proper rules and an even match for everyone. It hurts when other people are simply better than us; some people have to work more tirelessly, while others get away with dozing off for years. Everyone works at a different pace, everyone has different circumstances, and everyone has their own things to attend to. We need to focus on ourselves.

How to Change Your Mindset:

When starting, altering your mindset is a difficult challenge. We’d argue it is one of the most enduring and tenacious things to fix within a short span, but the outcome will be positive. Look for opportunities and ways to challenge yourself. Try to force yourself outside of your comfort zone and work hard. It is painful to find success in an activity; pro athletes work out and practice for several years. You will need to realise that success takes an indefinite amount of time. Many people will not tire themselves and quit because there is no guarantee that success is waiting for them. However, without trying, you may never know if you’ve reached a limit. It takes a different amount of time for everyone, but all have these things in common: Consistency, Challenges, and Focus.

How to Approach English:

We’ve gone through numerous ideas and elements, but there is an essential question that should be answered. How does a mindset relate to English? English is a difficult language, and the journey will be tough. It will take years upon years to finally see progress, and the progress may not even be worthwhile. Beginners see immense growth in the first couple of months, but once they hit a plateau, they tend to quit and don’t truly optimise their potential. Obviously, when you try something new, instant growth will follow the first couple of sessions because you’re trying something new and learning new techniques and strategies. But after a year or two, your mind and body have already learned most things, and pushing yourself becomes extremely difficult. Even though circumstances have gotten burdensome, you must persevere and work more diligently than ever. Your mind is trying to hone your skills and find ways to accelerate learning; it will just take supplementary time. That is the beauty of English: the most experienced writers and professors can still learn things through the basics. True mastery is achieved through prioritising the fundamental skills and applying those skills to more advanced topics. Approach English with these things in mind,

  • It is a difficult and enduring process, but the results will be favourable.

  • I will push myself past my limit

  • If I ever feel like I’m stuck, just remember that I’ve improved this much

Mindset is important.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, learning English is more than vocabulary words and grammar rules. The true improvement happens in the mind. Approaching challenges and adaptation are the two fundamental ideas important for growth and consolidation for all individuals. Hope Through English advocates for a growth mindset. Everyone should think positively about themselves and their own skills. We are all humans, and we should maximise our individual talents rather than futile comparisons.

Quotes:

You cannot build a skyscraper without knowing how to build a house.”

“A champion is someone who masters the foundations more than anyone else”

“Without the basics, there are no advancements”

“In a Fixed Mindset, the gate will occasionally open, but in a growth mindset, there is no gate.”
