Ethiopia

 Voices Across Valleys and Villages

Context
In rural Ethiopia, especially across Oromia and the Southern Nations regions, English is a core subject in secondary schools—but many children encounter the language for the first time without prior exposure.

What We See
Instruction tends to be textbook-driven, with little opportunity for students to hear or practice spoken English. Classes are often overcrowded, and teachers themselves may lack confidence in conversational English.

How We Help

  • Small peer-led conversation circles with volunteers

  • Visual learning aids tied to agricultural and community life

  • Speaking games that reduce fear of mistakes

Real Change
“I said my sister’s name and what she eats in English. I was shy, but it felt good.” — Hiwot, age 10

Our Focus
Build early comfort with speaking by connecting language to family, food, and farming—the daily world students already know.
