Why Laos?

In many rural provinces like Oudomxay and Savannakhet, schools often lack English teachers and rely heavily on rote memorization. Students typically only encounter English in exams or through rare contact with travelers, limiting opportunities to practice.

Our Approach

• Cultural storytelling: using Lao legends, Buddhist fables, and folktales to introduce vocabulary and grammar

• Community reading circles: small-group reading sessions to strengthen comprehension and speaking confidence

• Digital basics: training students to use mobile devices for dictionaries, pronunciation guides, and online learning tools

Volunteer Highlight

Mentors adapt traditional Lao folktales into English, blending familiar cultural narratives with new language skills. This approach helps students connect emotionally with lessons while building confidence in everyday English use.

Students gradually gain confidence to use English beyond the classroom—at temples, in markets, and at home. Many begin teaching simple English phrases to siblings and younger peers, multiplying the impact within their families.
